Telepresence and Holography / Holograms - November 2008
Editor’s viewpoint on their differences, likenesses and future...
We all just recently viewed an historic CNN holographic interview on an historic Election Night. CNN stated this type of imaging has never been done before on National TV and I believe that. I haven’t seen anything like it. The live interview caught me by surprise and sure had the “wow” factor attached to it didn’t it? Here’s a link to the actual interview.
CNN Hologram Video
The question now has to be asked. Is it Telepresence?
I’m no expert on the subject but I’m going to throw my hat into the ring, go out on a limb and say yes, I believe it is. Although I know many video conferencing purists are rolling their eyes and grabbing their guns right about now with my statement.
While I do know that Telepresence still hasn’t been universally defined (Houston, we have a problem), here’s how I see it…. Broken down to its simplest form - “tele” (through electronic means) and “presence” (present). This is how I’m justifying my opinion by lumping holography and Telepresence together. Just as Telepresence is surely an offshoot of video conferencing, holographic imaging (like we viewed on CNN) surely has to be considered an offshoot of Telepresence. The interviewer was “telepresent” from Chicago and beamed into the CNN Election Headquarters. She was most assuredly - “telepresent”. There was negligible latency, the imaging was fantastic and both interviewers were rehearsed on what they would say. I’ve just recently read that CNN actually “downgraded” the experience to make it “movie” quality and not as good as it could have been. Maybe they thought us mere mortals would be shocked if they showed their complete hand. I have a feeling it was so big to them, they didn’t want it to get upstaged by the historic election. I’m willing to bet we’ll see the “true” power of this technology in the upcoming weeks and months when they can put the pedal to the medal and show it off without having it sidetracked.
What an amazing time for this technology (all differences and opinions aside). Telepresence Doctors, nurses, teachers, schools and healthcare (healthpresence) will benefit from the recent gains in this state-of-the-art industry whether holograms, Telepresence or holography. Airlines also have to see the threat to a portion of their business travel. Hell, who wants go through security and fly to Miami for a two-hour conference when you can look them in the eye via Telepresence?
Beam me up Scotty! Simply amazing…!

El Segundo, Calif. (PRWEB) November 5, 2007 -- Accordent Technologies, Inc. today announced new capabilities in its award-winning Accordent Media Management System that extend the ability of organizations to consolidate disparate multimedia communications assets into a single, unified content management portal. The new developments enable clients to not only integrate archived videoconferences from the TANDBERG Content Server? and Flash media presentations within the management system framework, but to also to track and report on viewer interaction with the assets over time.
The new capabilities will be unveiled tomorrow at the Streaming Media West exhibition in San Jose, where the Accordent Media Management System also will be recognized by the publishers of Streaming Media Magazine at a reception honoring the magazine's 2007 Readers' Choice Awards.
"This product integration from Accordent Technologies with the TANDBERG Content Server supports the demand from enterprise customers to facilitate the management of rich-media content in a single portal environment," said TANDBERG Director of Global Product Marketing, Peter Nutley, "The ability to record videoconferences and then store and stream them to a wider audience ensures customers can maximize their business communications investment."
"In our experience, the more that clients use video communications, the more likely they are to take the logical step of capturing and converting that information into online archives that can be easily accessed by anyone from the desktop. We're also pleased to give clients the ability to wrap audience tracking and reporting capabilities around their growing inventory of Flash presentation assets," said Mike Newman, CEO of Accordent Technologies.
The Accordent Media Management System uniquely delivers a centralized online infrastructure for searching, publishing and securing multi-level access to presentations created with Accordent rich media creation products (the Accordent Capture Station?, Accordent PresenterPRO? and Accordent Engage?) and can also ingest, store and track third-party video and audio sources, such as meetings held via videoconference, web conference and audio conference. Accordent clients can import and convert output from major videoconferencing systems and automatically publish the content -- organized by its descriptive metadata -- into the system where it appears as another asset alongside Accordent rich media presentations.
As an integrated component of the joint solution, the Accordent Media Management System capabilities will enable customers to authenticate and track viewer interaction with the videoconference or Flash archived presentations over time, providing administrators with a record of who has watched each presentation, how long they watched it for and how viewers interact with the material (using polling, testing and Q&A). Clients also can use the system's online testing with its advanced reporting capabilities for auditable online professional certification and regulatory compliance programs.

Bridging Time, Connecting Lives: History Of Video Conferencing
Once upon a time, video conferencing did not exist. If you want to speak to several people, you'd have to climb up the apex of a hill and loudly invite them to visit your cornfield. While therapeutic and easy, shouting can, nevertheless, be exhausting. Soon, people grew tired of shouting, so they tried communicating by telegraph. However, talking by clicking sounds was not very user-friendly. For a while, the telephone seemed the best solution. The invention of the television, however, opened the doors to better and even more dramatic means for communication. It was not long before video conferencing was developed, and in time, it became the most virtual form of person-to-person communication. Ironically, the history of video conferencing di...
